San Diego lifeguards closed the Ocean Beach pier early today due to dangerously high waves and riptides.
The high surf is expected to continue through Saturday evening, according to the National Weather Service.
A high surf advisory was declared by the NWS and will remain in effect until 4 p.m. Saturday, while a coastal flood advisory is in effect until 10 a.m. Saturday.
The pier was closed at 3:20 a.m., according to a San Diego lifeguard dispatcher. There were no other closures to report, he said.
Today, San Diegans can expect 8 to 10-foot surf, with sets up to 12 feet, the Weather Service advised. The agency forecast slightly smaller waves on Saturday -- 6 to 8-foot surf with 10-foot sets.
The rip current potential today is high, according to the Weather Service.
