San Diego county today reported its first swine-flu related death of the year.
Sixty-three people have died with the H1N1 virus in San Diego, but the region hadn't seen such a death since December 30th. The latest fatality was a 22-year-old man with underlying medical conditions.
Swine flu peaked in the fall of 2009, but the number of cases have dwindled since then.
The decreasing incidents have decreased the demand for vaccine. The San Diego county health department now has a stockpile of more than 20,000 doses.
County health officer Wilma Wooten says this latest death shows that the H1N1 virus is still in the community and vaccination is still the best prevention.
Since the virus first emerged a year ago, 928 people have tested positive for the virus after being hospitalized in San Diego County.
