A music-filled play that has performed to sold-out audiences in Rio de Janeiro provides a searing look at race and inequality in Brazil, home to the hemisphere's largest black population.
The theme of subterfuge is at the heart of the work that explores what it takes to be black and survive in South America's largest country.
The trilogy of plays also explodes the long-standing myth of "racial democracy," a tool used by successive governments to promote the idea that Brazil is immune from racism because its ethnic groups were all treated equally. Nothing could be further from the truth in a country where blacks earn half what whites earn and are half as likely to get a basic education.
