The Horrible Imaginings Film Festival kicks off Friday in Balboa Park, showcasing horror movies from San Diego and abroad.
Festival director Miguel Rodriguez said he started the event in 2010 simply because San Diego didn't already have one.
"For me, the horror genre is therapy," Rodriguez said. "I need these films in order to function as a human being. They help me traverse the dark side in a safe way."
The festival is being held at the Museum of Photographic Arts this year. In previous years, the festival was held in smaller venues in San Diego.
The festival starts Friday at 5 p.m. and runs through the weekend.
