There is a party kicking off this weekend to celebrate vibrant subcultures that emerged in San Diego from the 1970s through 1990s.
The San Diego History Center will present "I’m Not Like You: Notes From the San Diego Underground" from April 20 to October 27. The exhibition celebrates the city’s skate, punk and hip-hop culture. Through pictures, music and video, the collection highlights the intersection between these underground scenes. The subcultures included young people who were outside of the mainstream and who shared interests in music, art and expression.
Curator Kaytie Johnson said it is important to recognize the influence of hip-hop, punk and skate
"These are important histories that have not really been told, and at the San Diego History Center that's what we're interested in doing," Johnson said. "Telling the story of communities that had the chance to represent themselves and do it through their perspective."
