The Department of Defense is gearing up to help American military families evacuate from the island where the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant is situated, according to Reuters. The news agency reports the DoD announced a voluntary evacuation from Honshu island which affects roughly 20,000 U.S. military dependents. There are more than a dozen bases on Honshu. Pentagon spokesman Colonel Dave Lapan told Reuters:

CNN reports that the evacuation authorization "applies only to family members living on the island of Honshu and will not cover those who are simply visiting."
