Lance Cpl. Joe M. Jackson, a Camp Pendleton-based Marine, died in Helmand province Afghanistan on Saturday, according to a press release from the Department of Defense. Jackson, just 22-years-old, was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment at Camp Pendleton.
Jackson was a Gila River Indian who grew up in White Swan, Washington, as reported by local television station KNDO. Jackson's father, Shawn Marceau, told KNDO that his son was his best friend. The Marine Corps informed Marceau that his son has been awarded the Purple Heart and four other military honors.
