Tragedy befell Fleet Week in New York City early this morning, when a Marine was hit by a car and killed while crossing the street, according to the Associated Press. The name of the 22-year-old Camp Lejuene-based Marine hasn't been released yet because his family has yet to be notified.

The AP reports the Marine was crossing 12th Avenue when the car struck him. Law enforcement has filed no charges against the 39-year-old driver, who remained on the scene and called 911. The Marine's ship, the USS Iwo Jima, is docked very close to where the accident occurred.

Col. Frank Donovan, commander of Camp Lejeune's 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit, briefed reporters this morning on the tragedy:
