Naval Base San Diego (NBSD) officially re-launched its anti-cigarette butt litter campaign May 11.
"Kick Butts" was initially instituted here in February 2011, when NBSD leadership learned that world-wide, cigarette butts are the No. 1 littered item: estimated at 178 million pounds a year and 95 percent of cigarette filters are made cellulose acetate, a type of plastic that takes years to degrade.
NBSD Commanding Officer Capt. Winton Smith said this program is just one more example of how base personnel are committed to being the best in environmental stewardship.
"I want to encourage our Sailors and civilian team members to commit themselves to 'Kick Butts'," said Smith. "Even if you don't smoke, taking just a few minutes out of your day to police up these awful pollutants can really make a difference in preserving the appearance of our base and the local habitat."
