Starting Memorial Day, active-duty military and their families will be able to visit more than 1,600 museums across the country - free of charge.
The Blue Star Museums initiative is made possible through a collaboration between Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense, and the National Endowment for the arts. This year, Blue Star Museums is also teaming up with Joining Forces, the White House initiative to improve job and life opportunities for military families.
The 2012 Blue Star Museums initiative kicked off today at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. NEA Chairman Rocco Landesman said at the event:
“This is both an opportunity to thank military families for their service and sacrifice, as well as a chance to create connections between museums and these families that will continue throughout the year. Especially for families with limited time together, those on a limited budget, and ones that have to relocate frequently, Blue Star Museums offers an opportunity to enjoy one another and become more fully integrated into a community.”
Family members of deployed service members can also participate by showing their military family ID card.
Blue Star Museums last until Labor Day.
