A Marine recruit from MCRD San Diego was arrested this morning after allegedly running across the airport runway at Lindbergh Field.
A news release from MCRD San Diego states the recruit reported to MCRD San Diego on Monday. He had not yet started his recruit training.
Harbor Police Sgt. Brad Hizer told U-T San Diego the Marine, whose name has not yet been released, was injured in the escapade:
The Marine suffered multiple lacerations and his uniform pants were snagged off him by the razor wire topping the airport security fence.
The Marine was first spotted sprinting across the runway by an airport control tower worker around 6:20 this morning, according to San Diego International Airport spokeswoman Diana Lucero. She told the U-T the man then tried to hide in a janitor’s van.
Authorities arrested him at approximately 6:27 a.m.
10News reports the man was then taken to Naval Medical Center San Diego.
Lucero told the U-T airport operations weren't affected by the incident. And, this isn't exactly a first at Lindbergh Field:
“This happens maybe once every other year.”
MCRD San Diego says it is cooperating fully with local authorities.
