Both pilots ejected safely before their F-16 fighter jet crashed near in suburban Phoenix Wednesday evening, according to an Air Force news release.
The jet was assigned to the 309th Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base.
Phoenix television station CBS5 reports that the two jet crew members were an instructor and a student.
There were several witnesses to the F-16 crash. Suburban Phoenix resident Eva DelaCruz told CBS5:
"The jet exploded. It went boom. It exploded again and we looked up and saw the jet with a lot of flames. Like a lot of fire and I said that's not normal because we see jets left and right."
The cause of the accident is under investigation. The jet crashed in a field near Luke AFB, and there was no damage to private property reported on the ground.
