Four American service members are currently in stable condition at a hospital in Nairobi, Kenya, after their military aircraft was attacked with gunfire in South Sudan on Saturday, according to NBC News.
U.S. Africa Command said in a statement released to Stars and Stripes:
“As the aircraft, three CV-22 Ospreys, were approaching the town [of Bor] they were fired on by small arms fire by unknown forces.
"All three aircraft sustained damage during the engagement.”
On Sunday, however, roughly 380 U.S. officials and private citizens were able to be safely flown out of Bor to safer locations on both chartered flights and military aircraft, USA Today reports.
The U.S. State Department released a statement on Sunday that reads, in part:
"The U.S. government is doing everything possible to ensure the safety and security of United States citizens in South Sudan. We are working with our allies around the world to connect with and evacuate U.S. citizens as quickly and safely as possible. For their safety and security, we will not outline specific evacuation plans...
"We strongly recommend U.S. citizens in South Sudan depart immediately, and we encourage those who remain to keep in touch with the Embassy and update their locations and status by contacting us at southsudanemergencyusc@state.gov."
