They ate every meal together, slept next to each other each night. Marine Corps veteran Sgt. Robert Hulsey forged an unbreakable bond with his Improvised Detection Dog Jjoe when the two served together in Afghanistan for seven months in 2011.
Hulsey told the Dallas Morning News:
“Every single day, I’d wake up in the morning, and we’d patrol [around the base] for a few hours and come back, then again for a few hours in the evening.”
When the Marine Corps recently retired Jjoe from his official duties, Hulsey was eager to adopt him.
Hulsey himself had retired from the Marines, and moved to Texas with his wife and infant son. Thanks in part to Mission K9 Rescue, a nonprofit based in the Ventura County town of Newbury Park, and the American Humane Association, the two veterans reconnected this week after three years apart.
