(Soundbite of bell ringing)
MONTAGNE: In New York City this morning, a moment of silence and the ring of a bell marked the minute five years ago when the first of two planes crashed into the World Trade Center. In a solemn ceremony at ground zero, thousands gathered at the spot where the World Trade Center once stood. Family members held flowers and framed photos of their loved ones and took part in tearful readings of the names of the victims.
Ms. CARDONA (Wife of 9/11 Victim): My husband, Jose Manuel Cardona, we never forget.
Ms. CALANDROLO(ph) (Wife of 9/11 Victim): And my husband, Joseph Michael Calandrolo, you live on forever in our hearts. You will be remembered here until the end of time.
MONTAGNE: Today's ceremony in New York City was one of several commemorative events around the country. In Shanksville, Pennsylvania, hundreds gathered at a temporary memorial to those who died aboard United flight 93. At the Pentagon, colleagues, friends and family members of the victims remember the day with a moment of silence, tributes to the victims, and music. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR.
