Attorney General Alberto Gonzales announced that he will resign his post, effective in September. The move came after months of complaints from Republicans and Democrats in Congress.
After the announcement, President Bush called Gonzales "a talented and honorable person" whose "good name was dragged through the mud for political reasons."
New York Sen. Charles Schumer said of the resignation, "It has been a long and difficult struggle but at last, the attorney general has done the right thing and stepped down."
Schumer tried to sound a conciliatory note, as well, saying of Gonzales' possible replacement, "All we ask is that you choose somebody who puts the rule of law first. We're not looking for confrontation here."
"He has dedicated years of his life to public service, both in Texas and at the federal level, and I wish him and his family all the best as they enter the next stage of their lives," said House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH).
