The New York Times reported Thursday on two secret memos in which the Justice Department approved of "harsh" interrogation tactics for terrorism suspects — authorization that came as the Bush Administration was publicly denouncing torture.
Scott Shane, one of the journalists who reported the story for the Times, says the Justice Department, then led by Alberto Gonzales, explicitly authorized interrogation methods in 2005 that likely violate legal standards since mandated by Congress and the courts.
Shane talks with Robert Siegel.
