Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano told California lawmakers Wednesday that border security is improving. Tanya Snyder reports.
Napolitano told Senator Dianne Feinstein at an oversight hearing that there's less violence on the U.S. - Mexico border.
"I don't think it would be appropriate for me to claim credit for that. The number one factor in that was the decision of the president of Mexico to send the military into Juarez," said Napolitano.
Border Czar Alan Bersin says Mexican troops are stationed in Baja California as well.
"Juarez is the most recent and dramatic, but there have been Mexican soldiers assigned to other cities as well, for example Tijuana," Bersin says.
Napolitano said Mexico's homicide rate is going down. She also reported that southbound vehicle inspections at every border crossing are helping to stop the trafficking of U.S. guns into the hands of the Mexican drug cartels.
