San Diego’s Center City Development Corporation is recommending the city move forward with a plan to build a new city hall.
The CCDC board has voted unanimously to recommend the City Council enter into exclusive negotiations with developer Gerding Edlen. The City Hall project has generated controversy because of its price tag. It could cost more than $500 million over the next 50 years.
Board Chair Fred Maas says he’s not concerned with the mixed reaction the project has received among City Council members. He says CCDC’s action will help ensure the right decision is made.
“Setting a framework for a negotiation to determine what does makes the most sense for the city I think is what everybody wants,” he says.
Maas says he doesn’t know if Gerding Edlen will walk away from the project if the Council does not enter into an exclusive negotiation. But he says the developer has been patient and flexible as the process has moved along.
