San Diego’s Mayor says the city may need to change the way appointments are made to its ethics commission. The city council has recently deadlocked on the latest nominations.
The city council couldn’t agree about whether to confirm nominations to the ethics commission. Council members Donna Frye and Carl DeMaio essentially stalled the nominations by introducing a plan to reform the appointment process. They say reforms would make the ethics commission more independent. Mayor Jerry Sanders says it’s important to get the issue resolved.
“I’ve already talked with the city attorney and the council president about meeting to figure out a different process if this one’s not going to work," said Sanders. "But we need those commissioners in there and I think they were good choices.”
He also says he doesn’t know if the plan from DeMaio and Frye would improve anything. The council members proposed letting a panel of retired judges confirm the nominations. Right now the council has that responsibility. The current ethics panel will continue to serve until the council agrees on how to move forward.
