The Port of San Diego held an official groundbreaking Tuesday for the new Broadway Pier cruise ship terminal in downtown. The chair of the port board maintains the public will have regular access to the pier.
The new terminal has drawn criticism from port opponents who say the building will further block views and public access to the water. But San Diego Port Board Chair Steve Cushman says that’s not the case.
“This terminal will be set back from Harbor Drive 400 feet. That’s a whole city block back. So we’re not blocking it off and walling the bay,” he said.
Cushman says Broadway pier will be closed when a ship is docked there. But he says the terminal will serve as a backup to the B Street facility and will be open to the public most of the time. He says the Broadway terminal will also be available for other events when it’s not being used by a ship. Work is expected to be complete in December of next year.
