Californians may have a chance to vote next year on whether to legalize marijuana. Supporters of the concept say they've collected more than enough signatures to put the issue on the November ballot.
There are actually four initiatives in circulation that would legalize marijuana, but only one looks like it will qualify.
The measure would legalize possession of up to one ounce of marijuana for adults 21 and older. Cities and counties could decide whether to allow people to grow it and sell it. Local lawmakers could also tax marijuana sales.
Medical marijuana dispensaries would not be affected.
A Field Poll taken last spring revealed 56 percent of California voters favor legalizing the drug.
Critics say the measure would increase drug abuse among kids. Supporters say under the initiative, anyone who supplied marijuana to minors could be put in jail.
