The pro-democracy protests in Egypt are expected to spill over into San Diego tomorrow where a rally supporting Egyptian anti-government demonstrators will be staged at the federal building downtown.

A group called Activist San Diego hopes to draw hundreds of people to the federal building tomorrow. The rally is meant to show solidarity with Egyptians and people in Yemen and Jordan who are clamoring for democratically elected governments that will stamp out decades of corruption, repression and high unemployment. Ahmed Shabaik, who was born in Egypt, hopes the rally draws people of all backgrounds.

“It’s really important for the people here in California everybody with a conscience should be in support of the protesters in Egypt looking forward to democracy and freedom after over 30 years of repression and oppression,” Shabaik said.

He said rallies outside of the Middle East boost the morale of protesters within the region.

“Of course that will give them a great, big support,” Shabaik said. “At least they know that everybody around the world at least they are with them and are supporting the cause.”

The protest is scheduled for 4 p.m.
