City officials had hoped the new center under construction at 6th Avenue and B Street in the old World Trade Center building would be open by December.
But the San Diego’s Housing Commission’s Richard Gentry said that’s not going to happen. The building in downtown’s financial district is being renovated and Gentry said it’s taking longer than anticipated.
“The issue is this is a rehab of an existing structure with multiple issues,” he said. “And you never know what you get in a rehab of an old structure until you get into it.”
Gentry said the developer doesn’t anticipate being done with the project until the end of December. Because of the delay San Diego will once again put up a temporary winter homeless structure for adults. It will be located near the border of Barrio Logan and the East Village, in the same location as last year.
The city has also authorized the opening of a temporary winter shelter for veterans on Sports Arena Boulevard. Both the adult shelter and the veterans shelter will be funded by the Housing Commission and the City of San Diego and will open in November or December.
