UT San Diego Offers Political Candidates Tips
UT San Diego is inviting political candidates into its offices this week to offer tips on how to get their message across. But the invitations are not quite the same for all candidates.

The leaders of the Republican and Democratic Parties in San Diego say it’s the first time the paper has invited their members for a visit.

The invitations are not quite the same: the one for Tuesday evening says, “You are cordially invited to join Chairman Tony Krvaric and the Republican Party for an exciting evening at the new UT San Diego. “

Krvaric said he’s grateful for the chance to take advantage of the UT’s offer of a “one stop shop for candidates.” He said, with the cost of sending flyers, it’s useful to know the paper’s circulation, especially publications like “Enlace,” a Spanish language edition published weekly.

The next invitation for Thursday night simply says: “You are cordially invited to join us for an exciting evening at the new UT San Diego.” There is no mention of party. Democratic Party chairman Jess Durfee said that’s because, when they were sent a copy of a flyer last week, inviting candidates to join the Democratic Party at the paper, it was the first they had heard of the event. Since they were not hosting the event, they did not authorize their name at the top of the flyer.

Durfee said he assumes the second invite is actually for ‘everyone else’ who is not a Republican, since Independent candidates also received invitations to Thursday’s event.

Both invitations say UT Vice Chairman John Lynch will welcome the candidates. Both offer a chance to meet the Editor, to find out more about the Editorial Board and how to get their endorsement. The invitation for Tuesday’s event offers a “Tour of the UT TV studios and the new newsroom with Roger Hedgecock.” The invitation for other candidates on Thursday night is for a “Tour of the UT TV studios and ‘glance’ at the new newsroom.“
