Legislature Takes On Items From Prisons To Schools

One of the biggest votes of the day was the passage of a court-mandated plan meant to ease overcrowding in California prisons. The measure now goes to the governor.

The Senate also passed a measure allowing undocumented immigrants who pass the bar to become attorneys in California. And the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights made it through. It regulates the number of hours employees can work and requires overtime for certain domestic workers.

An extension on car registration fees squeaked through both chambers heading to the governor. Assembly members also approved a measure allowing some schools to opt of state standardized tests in preparation for the implementation of Common Core standards.

Both the Senate and Assembly plan to work until late into the night Thursday in an effort to avoid having to work on Friday, when Yom Kippur begins at sundown.
