Rep. Darrell Issa Will Not Seek Re-Election

The Story

Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Vista, says he will not seek re-election in California’s 49th congressional district after nine terms in office. The seat was expected to be highly competitive as polls show Democrats are poised to make gains and possibly take over the house majority in the 2018 general election. Issa’s coastal district stretches from the Sorrento Valley area to parts of Orange County.

DACA Dealmaking Amid an Immigration Crackdown

The Story

President Donald Trump welcomed cameras into an hour-long bipartisan meeting with members of Congress to negotiate an extension of protections for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program Tuesday. Democrats want a standalone bill, but Republicans are pushing to include funding for a border wall and new restrictions on current immigration policy.

During a closed meeting with members of Congress to discuss immigration Thursday, Trump questioned why the U.S. would accept more people from Haiti and "shithole countries" in Africa, rather than places like Norway.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration has announced it will end protected status for nearly 200,000 Salvadoran refugees and ICE carried out workplace raids at dozens of 7-Eleven stores across the country. We also discuss a report in the San Diego Union-Tribune that the city of San Diego is paying security costs for the border wall prototypes.
