Vehicle habitation ban revived
After receiving complaints from residential neighborhoods, a San Diego City Council committee voted this week to advance a new ordinance that would limit overnight vehicle habitation. San Diego’s previous ban was repealed earlier this year after a federal judge deemed a similar ordinance in Los Angeles to be constitutionally vague. As the full City Council weighs the issue, the city is re-purposing a parking lot near SDCCU Stadium as a place where people who live in their vehicles can legally park overnight.

Fast tracking the convention center vote
San Diegans will likely vote a bit sooner on a plan to increase hotel taxes. If passed, the new revenue would fund an expansion of the San Diego Convention Center and an array of local services. In a 5-4 vote, the City Council announced its intention to place the initiative on the March 2020 primary ballot. An additional council vote is required to make it official. Critics say the move violates the spirit of a voter-approved change to the city charter that sets the November general election as the default for citizens’ initiatives. The City Council has the authority to sidestep the rule on a case-by-case basis.
