A lightning strike sparked a small, slow-moving brush fire on rugged sloping terrain in the East County highlands today.
The blaze on the north side of Volcan Mountain began spreading about 8 a.m., according to Cal Fire.
Crews who had to hike into the inaccessible area and personnel aboard air tankers and firefighting helicopters had the roughly one-acre burn area contained within about three hours, said Mike Mohler, a fire captain with the state agency.
The blaze caused no injuries or structural damage, Mohler said.
