The City Council today allocated an additional $100,000 for a hotel voucher program to house homeless families in San Diego.
The program, which provides vouchers that homeless families can use to stay for up to a week in local hotels and motels, is currently administered by San Diego County.
The $100,000 authorized unanimously by the City Council, will be used to augment the $50,000 San Diego already contributes to the program. The money will come from the Centre City Development Corp., San Diego's downtown redevelopment arm.
According to the San Diego Housing Commission, the agency that handles homeless issues for the city, the voucher program will serve up to 151 homeless families.
The funding was proposed by Councilman Tony Young as a way to help families who are not allowed to stay at the city's temporary winter homeless shelter.
The City Council voted last week to place the temporary winter homeless shelter, a tent structure that serves single adults, in a vacant building in Barrio Logan.
