A man was killed after being struck by multiple vehicles on the Interstate 5 freeway in Oceanside on Sunday night.
The accident on I-5 south near the Aliso Creek Rest Area was reported at 11:19 p.m. Sunday, near Camp Pendleton, according to California Highway Patrol. Officers believe the victim may have wandered onto the freeway from the rest area.
The victim was initially struck by a white mid-sized pickup truck in the left southbound lane, according to the California Highway Patrol. The driver sped off after the crash, the CHP reported.
As the man was trying to get up, he was struck by a 2011 Kia Sportage. The small SUV spun out and collided with a 2010 Honda Insight, a 2013 Acura TL and a 2010 Mercedes S550, according to the CHP. The three drivers stopped at the scene and cooperated with police. Two of those cars actually struck each other as they were pulling over.
The victim, a 24-year-old Hispanic man from North Hollywood, was not immediately identified. None of the drivers were seriously hurt.
Traffic was slowed to a crawl as three of the four southbound lanes near Camp Pendleton were closed for several hours while emergency responders cleared the scene.
