CHP Arrests 34 Drivers In San Diego County During New Year's Celebrations

California Highway Patrol officers arrested 34 impaired drivers in San Diego County between New Year's Eve and Friday morning, compared to 20 DUI arrests in the year-ago holiday period.

Statewide, a total of 510 DUI arrests were made on freeways and in unincorporated areas between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 6 a.m. Friday, compared to 457 in the comparable year-ago holiday period, according to the CHP.

One fatality was reported on San Diego County roadways during this year's holiday period, with eight deaths elsewhere in the state, according to the CHP.

Last year, 14 fatalities were reported statewide, but none in San Diego County. The fatality total accounts for all traffic deaths in the state. T

he DUI arrest tally reflects only those made by the CHP, not local agencies.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
