28 Traffic Deaths Reported In California During Holiday Weekend

A single traffic fatality occurred in the San Diego area over the New Year's holiday and the ensuing weekend, authorities reported Monday.

Between 6 p.m. Wednesday and 11:59 p.m. Sunday, the California Highway Patrol jailed 71 motorists on suspicion of driving while intoxicated on local roadways, the agency reported.

Statewide, 28 people died in auto accidents and the CHP made 1,158 DUI arrests over the same 102-hour period.
