Fire At Spring Valley Recycling Center Damages 2 Homes

A fire that started at a recycling facility in Spring Valley damaged two homes and injured one firefighter.

A half acre of cardboard caught fire at the facility in the 3800 block of Bancroft Drive Tuesday morning, Cal Fire Capt. Issac Sanchez said. The fire was put out by 8:55 a.m.

The firefighter was injured when a pile of cardboard toppled over him, Sanchez said. He said the firefighter was taken to a hospital but is expected to be OK.

Two residences on the same property were damaged and the occupants of four homes on nearby Helix Street cleared out voluntarily as the cardboard at the facility burned, Sanchez said.

The fire prompted authorities to shut down Bancroft Drive from state Route 94 to Kenwood Drive, and Helix Street between Bancroft Street and Kenwood Drive, the county Department of Public Works said.

KPBS has created a public safety coverage policy to guide decisions on what stories we prioritize, as well as whose narratives we need to include to tell complete stories that best serve our audiences. This policy was shaped through months of training with the Poynter Institute and feedback from the community. You can read the full policy here.
