Two pedestrians were killed Thursday, and a third was hospitalized in critical condition, when a 22-year-old man lost control of his Hyundai SUV and struck a bus bench with three people sitting behind it before crashing into a tree, police said.
The SUV was going northbound in the 1600 block of Murray Canyon Road at 11:09 a.m. when the driver lost control of his vehicle driving onto the east sidewalk, San Diego Police Sgt. Edward Zwibel said.
A 40-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, a 43-year-old man was taken to a hospital where he later died, and a 49-year-old woman was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, Zwibel said.
The driver remained at the scene and was not treated for any injuries.
Police said neither drugs nor alcohol were suspected in the crash. San Diego Police Department's Traffic Unit was continuing an investigation.
