USD Professor Examines Protests And Reasons Behind Them

It's not academic for University of San Diego sociology professor Cid Martinez, who studies the relationship between urban poverty, policing and gun violence in California.

University of San Diego sociology professor Cid Martinez knows the conditions that can trigger civil protests, and he knows what those protests can accomplish.

Martinez, whose work currently focuses on the relationship between urban poverty, policing and gun violence in California, believes the current wide-ranging protest marches were triggered by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis and others. He also argues people were pushed to the edge by COVID-19, which is having a disproportionate effect on communities of color.

Martinez joined Midday Edition on Monday to discuss how COVID-19 is contributing to the current protests and how today's protests compare to the Rodney King riots in 1992.
