The California Coastal Commission on Wednesday unanimously approved the extension of the trolley's blue line to University City and UC San Diego.
The San Diego Association of Governments asked for approval of the trolley route, which roughly follows Interstate 5 starting north of Old Town.
SANDAG has said the only remaining hurdle is the Federal Transit Administration, which must approve the grants. Construction is expected to start in the fall.
