Sunroad Calls Building Height Reduction Timeline Impossibly Fast

Sunroad Enterprises and the City of San Diego are hashing out a timeline to shorten a controversial officer tower. Sunroad has conceded to lower its Kearny Mesa building by 20 feet to abide by FAA standards. KPBS reporter Nicole Lozare has more.

Sunroad will lower its building in protest. The company insists the city issued a permit for a 180-foot tall building.

The FAA has no enforcement power, so the decision is up to the city.

The city has set a deadline of August 25th for the building to be lowered.

Sunroad spokesperson Karen Hutchens says it will be impossible to meet that deadline. She says the 20 feet that needs to be shaved off contains elevator mechanisms.

Hutchens : So this will be quite an engineering and design feat to relocate the elevator penthouse so that the building height can be reduced to an acceptable level.

Sunroad officials say this does not prevent them from seeking damages from the city for issuing the permit in the first place.
