Multi-hyphenate Monty Lapica in Self-Medicated (ThinkFilm)
Twenty-four-year old Monty Lapica makes his feature writing, directing, producing and starring debut in Self-Medicated (opening August 31 at United Artist Horton Plaza Theaters ). The film's tale of a troubled teen's battle with drugs and depression is drawn from Lapica's own life.
Set in Lapica's hometown of Las Vegas, Self-Medicated introduces us to the filmmaker's alter ego of Andrew Eriksen. Andrew had been an honor student but after the death of his beloved father he has fallen into depression, drug use and violent rebellion. He skips classes, gets into fights, and can barely suppress his rage at his prescription drug dependent mother (Diana Venora). He's in a downward spiral and refuses to admit he has a problem. His mom finally decides that she can't cope any more so she has him taken by force to a rehab facility that employs questionable procedures. This only seems to add fuel to his rebellion and to intensify his anger.
