Caramel
Lovely multi-hyphenate Nadine Labaki stars in Caramel (Roadside Attractions)

In both Persepolis (coming out in a English dubbed version on April 11) and Caramel (opening April 4 at Landmark's Hillcrest Cinemas ), Middle Eastern women prove how humor and personal narratives can win audiences over. In the case of Caramel , Lebanese filmmaker Nadine Labaki chooses not to focus on the violent conflict in her region but rather to tell a story about five women who meet regularly at a local beauty salon. I had a chance to speak with Labaki about Caramel , a film that has topped the Lebanese box office. Listen to my radio feature or read an extended version of my interview.
