San Diego State University is investigating a suspected case of swine flu. But closing the campus won't necessarily happen, even if the case is confirmed. KPBS Reporter Tom Fudge has more.
The suspected case is an SDSU student who went to the campus health services with flu-like symptoms, and was found to have type-A influenza. It will take several days before health officials know whether it is a confirmed case of swine flu. The San Diego county health officer has said she will consider closing schools, including universities, with only one confirmed case. But SDSU President Stephen Weber says it's not a forgone conclusion that SDSU will shut down if this is swine flu.
"The real question is, is there a real health indication that that's in the best interest of our student body. If we receive such an indication from county health, that's when we begin to go through the process. But not until," says Weber.
San Diego State has 35 thousand students. The campus has shut down before, including during the 2007 wildfires.
