From Frank Lloyd Wright to Frank Gehry, famed photographer Julius Schulman’s iconic images of architecture are an aesthetic timeline of how California modernism came to be. Sadly, he passed away in 2009, but familiarize yourself with his work at The Pearl Hotel this Tuesday night at 8, as they screen a documentary on his life, "Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Schulman," narrated by Dustin Hoffman.
Growing up is never easy, but five very different filmmakers make capturing it on camera look like a piece of cake. "Juvenile Status," a Cannes-approved selection of shorts curated by UCSD students, will screen tonight at The Loft, featuring five films that touch on the ambiguity of adolescence.
THEATER
The Intrepid Shakespeare Company will stage one of the Bard’s most beloved productions this weekend, but with a decidedly modern twist – their version of “The Taming of the Shrew” features actresses over 60 in the starring roles of Petruchio and Kate, the tale re-told as two women in love. It runs until June 6.
August Strindberg's “Miss Julie” was a complete scandal when it was first mounted in 1888. The tale of an ingénue’s rebellious seduction of her father’s valet remains just as provocative – and scintillating - today. It’ll be presented by the Stone Soup Theater Company at the North Coast Rep this weekend, with a limited run of five performances. 18 and up only.
Snoop Dogg will visit Harrah’s Rincon this weekend on a comedy tour with Mike Epps. Yes, that Snoop, and yes, we’re serious. Word on the street is that he’s hitting up the casino circuit in hopes of scoring some permanent Vegas time – watch your back, Wayne Brady.
MUSIC
Forget waiting for Oktoberfest – hit up CityBeat’s Festival of Beers this weekend for your fill of hip and hops. Sip on S.D.’s finest draft (tons of local and independent breweries will be there) while swaying to live music - we’re especially excited to see The Softlightes, whose Casbah performance sold out last time (watch the creative video for "Heart Made of Sound" above!)
So, the cool kids at Holiday Matinee and Sezio have sidled up to Ford (yes, that Ford) for a national advertising contest, one that consists of chronicling the things that make this town divine. As part of the gig, they’ll present a performance from Joel P. West & The Tree Ring at MCASD La Jolla this Friday night at 7:30.
Stop by the North Park Birch Theater next Wednesday for some jazz from guitarist Graham Dechter and his quartet. Making his local debut at just 23, Dechter may barely be able to buy a beer, but his compositions are completely classic. It’s presented by Lyric Opera San Diego as part of its “Jazz in North Park” series.
Austin songstress Amy Cook will bring her breathy vocals to The Casbah this Saturday, providing a pitch-perfect primer to The Heartless Bastards and Hacienda, also set to play. The tour’s slogan? “Love will chew you up and spit you out.”
From re-enactments of 50’s sci fi to some “brutal improv,” UCSD’s lineup for Spring Festival 2010, their two-week aural showcase of alumni, seems as trippily diverse (and wonderful) as always. Click here to check out the schedule for the upcoming week.

All things Fair Trade can be found in Pacific Beach this weekend (4761 Cass Street, to be exact), as our city's contribution to World Fair Trade Day. This free event will feature Fair Trade coffee, chocolate, wine, and goodies galore, as well as plenty of information and demonstrations – it’s planned for 12-4 this Saturday afternoon.
