Saldaña Withdraws From Supervisors Race

San Diego Assemblywoman Lori Saldaña has announced she is withdrawing from the race to challenge Supervisor Ron Roberts for his seat on the County Board of Supervisors.

Saldaña was the principal challenger to Roberts, who has held his seat on the County Board of Supervisors for the last 16 years. No one has successfully challenged a supervisor during that time.

Saldaña’s political consultant Larry Remer says she made the decision to withdraw in order to handle personal affairs after her mother’s death. “At the same time,” Remer said, “she is the number two in the Assembly in Sacramento in a very difficult year, and she needs to give that her undivided attention .”

Roberts had raised more than $100,000 to defend his seat. Saldaña raised just over $20,000.

San Diego City Councilwoman Donna Frye has said for months she may run for the seat.

The County Board is non-partisan, but Roberts, a Republican, represents a district where Democrats now outnumber Republicans among registered voters.
