Crossing South To The Baja Oceans

Airs Thursday, December 13, 2012 at 8 p.m. on KPBS TV

Above: CROSSING SOUTH host Jorge Meraz catches a skipjack tuna while staying in Bahia de Los Angeles. Fishing was good, he caught about five fish in 30 minutes.

Host Jorge Meraz will be live in the KPBS Studio on Thursday, Dec. 13th at 8 p.m.

CROSSING SOUTH is a travel show which explores Tijuana and Northern Baja. Bilingual travel companion and host Jorge Meraz takes the audience on a journey and de-mystifies the area.

Get to know the people, vernacular, foods, customs and places frequented by the locals. To find these travel treasures, Jorge goes further than the tourist traps. There’s a lot to learn and fun to have right next door by "Crossing South."

"Crossing South To The Baja Oceans" - Jorge goes further down Baja in this ocean-themed special. First we go to the "Natural Sea-World" at Bahia de Los Angeles, where we go fishing, snorkeling, and searching for the famed whale shark. Among colorful fish and playful sea lions, swimming with the whale shark is an unforgettable experience.

Then we taste scallops, lobster, clams and other things the ocean offers with Lucy, a long-time resident and local artist.

Then we head to San Quintin where we explore the fascinating world of seafood farming. Learn about the new oyster farming processes being used, and observe a hesitant Jorge slurp one down with salsa and lime.

The Abalone Project is also an intriguing venture as we see the tiny month old babies, all the way to five-year-old adults. Our last adventure takes us to Ensenada where we watch the ocean water fly into the air at the largest ocean-geyser in North America, La Bufadora.

CROSSING SOUTH is on Facebook, and episodes of this series are available for online viewing.
