Breastfeeding in airports can be a major hassle, but not at San Diego’s Lindbergh Field.
The airport now has three lactation rooms for nursing women: two in Terminal 1 and one in Terminal 2. They’re located behind security.
Airport spokeswoman Rebecca Bloomfield said the rooms do not resemble a broom closet.
"In fact, these rooms are very comfortable," Bloomfield said. "They’re quiet. They’re private, and they have nice lighting. They also even have a children’s seat. They’re just a very nice place for a nursing mother to sit and relax.”
California law requires all major commercial airports to have lactation rooms by January.
A bill has been introduced in Congress that would make that a nationwide requirement.
In a 2014 survey, published in the journal Breastfeeding Medicine, only 8 percent of U.S. airports reported having private lactation rooms.
