Gunmen tried to murder Baja California's Chief of Police in Tijuana Friday. The chief escaped unscathed but two agents and one of the assailants were killed. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has details.
It started when a three car convoy followed State Police Chief Carlos Gomez home. The assailants opened fire as the Chief approached his house. Gomez dodged the bullets, returned fire and called for backup. State police then chased the gunmen through Tijuana city streets. Two cars in the convoy escaped and one crashed. Police shot and killed the driver.
Shortly thereafter, two officers were sent to guard the chief's house. A few hours after they arrived they were shot to death by another convoy.
State authorities held a press conference to inform reporters of the events. But they would not take questions. Though, one detail they did offer was that the gunman who was killed had tattoos that looked like gang tattoos from Barrio Logan.
