San Diego seniors who didn't graduate because they failed California's high school exit exam had another chance to pass the test this week. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

For the past couple of days, scores of San Diego school students have been retaking the math and English portions of the exit exam. Teens who pass during the July testing period will still get a diploma this year. District spokesman Dick Van Der Laan is optimistic the remaining young people taking the test will pass. He says most of the students just went through a district-sponsored 'exit exam bootcamp.'

Van Der Laan: "It's a very intensive course teaching not only test-taking strategies but also some of the major content that they need to know."

This was the first year students had to pass the test in order to graduate. Nearly 90 percent of seniors in San Diego did that. A special commencement ceremony will be held next month for those who passed during the summer. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
