More than a year ago, medical officials at UCSD shocked the local health care community by announcing plans to move their hospital in Hillcrest. UCSD’s emergency room would remain in central San Diego, they said. But acute care and the trauma center would be consolidated with existing facilities in La Jolla.
The announcement lead to a round of sharp criticism, which continues to this day. Some have even accused UCSD of abandoning poor patients who live in central and south San Deigo.
Since then, San Diego County has commissioned a study of the local health care network. The purpose was to determine what local hospitals are up against, and how serious UCSD’s planned move was. During this hour we hear from both sides in the debate over the UCSD move.
