Tom Fudge : This week George Stevens died at the age of 74. Stevens served on the San Diego City Council from 1991 to 2002, when he was forced out by term limits. A lay minister, and an African-American, Stevens could be an inspiring speaker. And he had a tendency to rub political opponents the wrong way.
Stevens was born in 1932 in Louisiana, where he lived until he moved with his mother and stepfather to El Centro. A football scholarship brought him to San Diego State University. And during the 1960's he was a local agitator for civil rights. He was arrested at least twice for protesting discriminatory hiring practices at San Diego businesses .
A memorial viewing will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday the 23rd at Mount Erie Baptist Church, 511 S. 47th St., in San Diego. Services will be Oct. 24 at Bayview Baptist Church, 6126 Benson Ave., San Diego.
