The City of San Diego's seventh district council seat is poised to go into a runoff election. Republican April Boling and Democrat Marti Emerald will compete to represent District 7 neighborhoods like College Area and San Carlos. KPBS Reporter Nicole Lozare has more on that tight race.
About two hours after the polls close, Marti Emerald's supporters listen to jazz while waiting for results at her campaign headquarters on Waring Road.
But the former TV reporter is no where to be found. Too stressed at the narrow gap in the results, Emerald took a drive to relax, says her political consultant.
Upon her return, Emerald is composed and declares that she is ready for another round with April Boling.
Emerald: I look forward to another five months of meeting with voters and being in the community and we look forward to a victory in November.
For most of election night, Boling, an accountant, kept a two percent lead over Emerald. That's pretty significant for Boling who has had to overcome the longtime TV reporter's name recognition.
Emerald has strong backing from labor unions. Boling is endorsed by developers and tax-payer advocates.
